Description
Departments and other public bodies are unclear about the depth and breadth variations in file formats in use for electronic records.
To support an ongoing identification and monitoring of this information, the National Archives has produced:
- The PRONOM technical registry which provides a way of identifying file formats
- The DROID (Digital Record Object Identification) tool to perform trusted, automated batch identification of file formats, using both file extension and byte sequence signatures from PRONOM to identify and report file format versions of digital files
These tools were joint winners of the 2007 Digital Preservation Award sponsored by the Digital Preservation Coalition, and DROID has been awarded the government’s CSIA Claims Tested (CCT) Mark, Certificate Number 2008/02/0035 which independently validates the trusted nature of the product.
GOTS Awards
Products and Services that have been validated as Government Off The Shelf (GOTS) are designed for public sector use only. Details of the Claims and Testing are therefore only published on the CESG GSI website.
